What are we learning this term?
Main Experiences
Being Resourceful - We are exploring the importance of environmental sustainability and how we can be resourceful in addressing climate change
Discrete Experiences
English – We will begin with 2 weeks of narrative writing, followed by 2 weeks of non-chronological reports focused on the study of democracy, comparing democracy in the UK with that of Ancient Athens. After that, we will spend 4 weeks writing newspaper reports linked to our study of South America. Our class text is The Orchard Collection of Greek Myths.
In Reading – We are focusing on Greek myths, specifically from The Orchard Collection of Greek Myths, to build vocabulary, comprehension, and narrative structure.
Maths – This term, we are covering place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication, and division, following the White Rose Maths Year 5 (Version 3).
PE – Our focus is hockey, where we will practice dribbling, passing, and the rules of the game.
RE – We are studying the question, "What does it mean if God is loving and holy?"
Wellbeing – We are focusing on understanding and expressing a wide range of feelings and learning strategies to cope with those emotions.
How can you support at home?
Homework is sent home every Friday on an A4 sheet and should be returned by Wednesday for review in class. Each homework includes:
- 10 maths questions
- 10 multiple choice questions related to our current experience
- 10 spellings (updated every 2 weeks)
Please encourage your child to read daily and sign their reading record, which will earn them 1 house point and 1 point on the reading chart each time it is signed.
Term 1 - Exploring Democracy
In this exciting learning experience, our class will journey through Ancient Greece, discovering the incredible civilizations of Athens and Sparta! We'll dive into the world of fierce warriors, wise philosophers, and the birth of democracy, all while exploring how these ancient societies shaped the world we live in today.
Term 3 - Sculpting Greatness
In this Art experience, we explored how we can use the influence of a local artist to sculpt British wildlife using a variety of techniques and tools. We studied the work of local artist Julia Cox, who is deeply inspired by our local area here in Sevenoaks, and were lucky enough to display our pieces in the Kaleidoscope Gallery in Sevenoaks.
Hook
Julia Cox visited our school and spoke to us about her life, inspiration and art work. We were all inspired by her enthusiasm and the joy she takes from crafting her sculptures encouraged us to create art work we were proud of.
Outcome
Our work was displayed in the Kaleidoscope Gallery in Sevenoaks for our friends, family and the general public to enjoy.
Term 3 and 4 - Being Resourceful
In this learning experience, we are exploring the importance of environmental sustainability and how we can be resourceful in addressing climate change. We will study key environmental issues such as deforestation, water shortages and finding renewable alternatives for energy. We are then researching and developing ideas for our own solutions to environmental challenges, focusing on what we could do as individuals and as a community. We will then write letters to Laura Trott MP to demonstrate our learning.
Hook
We will begin our journey by watching an eye-opening environmental documentary that showcased the impact of climate change and the innovative ways people are working to combat it. The film will spark important conversations and deepen our understanding of the environmental issues we face, leaving us determined to take action.
Outcome
Our hard work will culminate in a mini COP29 climate summit, where we will present our ideas for climate action to an audience that included guests from the Sevenoaks Climate Action Network. These guest speakers will share their expertise and offer valuable feedback on our projects, inspiring us all to continue our efforts to create a more sustainable future. The summit will be a chance for us to showcase the power of being resourceful and making a difference in our community.
