Main Experiences

  • Shake it off: Writing a newspaper report linked to our geographical study of South America
  • Exploring Democracy: Exploring the concept of democracy, comparing the UK to Ancient Athens in a non-chronological report.

Discrete Experiences

English – We will begin with 2 weeks of narrative writing, followed by 2 weeks of non-chronological reports focused on the study of democracy, comparing democracy in the UK with that of Ancient Athens. After that, we will spend 4 weeks writing newspaper reports linked to our study of South America. Our class text is The Orchard Collection of Greek Myths.

In Reading – We are focusing on Greek myths, specifically from The Orchard Collection of Greek Myths, to build vocabulary, comprehension, and narrative structure. We will look at key skills including summarising, prediction, inference and retrieval.

Maths – This term, we are covering place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, following the White Rose Maths Year 5 scheme.

PE – Our focus is hockey, where we will practice dribbling, passing, and learn the rules of a game. Once we have developed these skills, we will hold a match with Kingfishers class to showcase our skills!

RE – We are studying the question, "What does it mean if God is loving and holy?" and thinking about the qualities of a god and how God is represented within Christianity in the Bible.

Wellbeing – We will start this term by recapping our friendship unit to ensure we are equipped to take on friendship challenges during Year 5. We will then move on to look at an introduction to CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) and work on understanding what core beliefs are and how to challenge negative beliefs and assumptions.

How can you support at home?

  • Ensure homework is completed weekly and on time.
  • Read with your child on a daily basis, listening to their fluency, expression and intonation and engaging in conversation about the text.
  • Practice times tables and related facts to ensure fluency.
